Figure 15. The eastern end of the spit has lower elevations and is overtopped by more of the tidal cycle. Linear-crested sand ripples shown in this photo are slightly asymmetrical. The steeper side faces the direction of net sand transport. Across much of the spit at the eastern end, net sand transport is in a shoreward direction across the top of the spit. Close examination often shows that the crests of the ripples have a reversed asymmetry indicating seaward transport on the last phase of the ebbing current across the spit, just prior to their exposure in the air.
