Figure 2. Potholes, Coos Canyon Falls on the Swift River, Byron, Maine. Erosion by the Swift River shows distinctive bedding in the metamorphic rock. The potholes are formed by hydraulic erosion, most likely begun when the area was covered by the last great ice sheet. More recent processes have continued to modify the potholes.
