Maine’s first and northern most State Park offers visitors a unique opportunity to enjoy winter in the outdoors.
Located near the city of Presque Isle, the Park offers excellent maintained trails for classical cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. The groomed 15 mile ski trail system offers a wide variety of skiing for all skill levels. Grooved double set track weave through distinctive Aroostook County forest and farm land areas, allowing visitors a chance to explore all the Parks winter beauty. The packed 5 mile snowshoe trail offers a vigorous trek to the top of Quaggy Jo Mountain. The trail system has two warming huts, away from the parking lot, allowing the users a chance to rest and meet new friends next to the fire. For those young at heart, use the plastic sleds provided or bring your own, a sliding hill near the Park entrance is packed and ready for a quick run down memory lane. There is an ice skating rink on the lake. It is generally open but conditions may vary after snow storms and warm temperatures.. Winter camping is allowed, but if you are looking for warmer accommodations check out visitAroostook.com for a list of local businesses.
Trail Conditions For March 8,2010
All trails are skiable but spring time conditions are in effect. Skiing will be fast and icy in the early mornings to soft and sticky in the afternoon. We will need new snow and colder temps to groom again and if we do not receive these conditions we may not groom again this year. Caution should be used when skiing in the down hill areas. There are numerous snow erosion areas exposing bare ground.
If you are a snowshoer still looking for snow, The snowshoe trails are packed very firm and in great shape. There has been a lot of wildlife sighting through out the park, so this is a great time to get out and enjoy the outdoor environment.
The sliding hill his packed and ready for a quick ride down memory lane. Use the sleds provided at the top of the hill or bring your own. The Skating rink is closed for the season and we will continue this activity again next year.
This is a great time to winter camp, with warmer temps and no signs of Black flies yet. So pack up the gear and head North to Maine's First State Park
Fees to use the park are $1.50 per adult 12-64, all other ages are free.
Please remember that snowshoers, hikers, and dogs are not allowed at any time on the ski trails. Violators maybe asked to leave. Thank you for being considerate.
