Maine Ice Out Dates

Welcome back! For the 3rd year in a row the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation, and Forestry is tracking Maine lake "Ice-Out" as our lakes start open up this Spring. The winter of 2012/13 was generally mild through December but only time will tell how well our lakes freeze this year. Recently, April has been cool and the ice is just hanging around.

For new visitors to this web page... in the Spring, during weekdays, we will continually update lake ice-out information daily as it becomes available. You are encouraged to send us a quick email when the ice goes out in your area so we can keep this page current. contact the ice-out webmaster@maine.gov

So.... what exactly is ice out? This topic has often been debated. For the purposes of this web page, we will consider "ice-out" to be when you can navigate unimpeded from one end of the water body to the other. There may still be ice in coves or along the shoreline in some areas but when a person can traverse the entire water body without being stopped by ice floes, we will consider the ice to be out.

Please remember to be careful out there. Cold water KILLS. An unplanned dunk in a lake with water temperatures running around 40 degrees can quickly numb your body and make climbing out impossible. Wear that PFD!
