Amherst Mountains Community Forest
The Maine Department of Conservation, Bureau of Parks and Lands, has completed a management plan for the Amherst Mountains Community Forest (AMCF) -- a 4,974 acre tract of forestland surrounding six ponds in the town of Amherst.  The tract is within the Bureau’s Eastern Interior Management Region for which a 15-year Management Plan was completed in July 2009.  A recent acquisition, the AMCF’s Management Plan will be appended to the regional plan.


Planning Process and Timeline:  

Public input and knowledge of the region have helped shape this plan, which will provide resource protection and management guidance for this property over the next 14-year period.  An Advisory Committee was formed to provide additional input and to review drafts of the plan.  Both an Advisory Committee meeting and a Public Scoping meeting were hosted in mid-March to review available information and solicit ideas on management issues that should be addressed in a draft plan.  A first draft of the Plan was developed in early April to be reviewed by the Advisory Committee and members of the interested public.  After considering feedback on the first draft, the Bureau developed a final draft plan in June.  A public meeting was held on this proposed plan in July. After an official comment period, the final plan was prepared for review and adoption by the Commissioner.
