Spednic Lake & Upper St. Croix River Corridor Management Plan

Update as of May 16, 2011:
Comments on the Final Draft Plan will be accepted until June 14th.
In 2003, a multi-year effort involving many partners resulted in the acquisition of approximately 51 miles (2,773 acres) of shorefront and islands within Maine’s Spednic Lake & Upper St. Croix River corridor to be maintained for their exceptional undeveloped character and backcountry recreational values, which are of state and international significance. Lands on Spednic Lake were acquired by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife (IF&W) and lands on the St. Croix River were acquired by the Maine Department of Conservation, Bureau of Parks & Lands (BP&L).
The St. Croix Waterway is guided by a “Plan for Long-term Cooperative Management of the St. Croix International Waterway” accepted in 1993 by Maine and New Brunswick. However, these state-owned and managed lands demand additional planning for resource and recreational management in order to retain a high quality backcountry experience, maintain efficiencies in recreation management and protect the undeveloped character and natural resources of this outstanding corridor.
Since October 2010, IF&W and BP&L have been working on a joint management plan for the Spednic Lake and Upper St. Croix River Corridor. Public input will help shape the plan, which will provide resource protection and management guidance for this property over the next 15-year period.
