Cover Letter to Commissioner Bowen

Jan. 31, 2012

Dear Commissioner Bowen,

On behalf of the Western Maine Education Collaborative (WMEC) Board of Directors and myself, we would like to thank you for the opportunity to provide input on the recently published Education Evolving: Maine’s Plan for Putting Learners First.?We have taken liberties with this feedback and instead of offering thoughts on what we support and what we would suggest for consideration, we have used the Goals, Objectives and Action Steps as a general framework to highlight how these concepts might be realized at a regional level.? Where appropriate, we have listed activities, examples of documents, initiatives and collaborative efforts that reflect some of the work the WMEC member districts, and the organization, have engaged in during the past six years.? We offer this point of view as a way to celebrate our accomplishments, examine how our past work aligns with what the MDOE is proposing and to provide you with real life examples and perspective.

We hope the attached document provides you with as much insight as it has provided us as we prepared this response.? Please feel free to contact me or any of our 11 member districts for further discussion or with any questions you might have.?

In addition to this “feed back” document, you will also find attached our current WMEC Futures Plan, a one page document highlighting WMEC and some of its current initiatives, our existing fee structure policy and samples of our newsletters.?

Thank you for the opportunity to inform your work and to share our perspective.

Mona Baker
WMEC/Executive Director
