American Ancestors: Using Genealogy to Teach Inclusive History

The Maine DOE is accepting registrations for the second year of the American Ancestors genealogical inquiry workshop.  This program trains teachers to use inquiry-based lessons that incorporate authentic methodologies used by professional genealogists.  Lessons guide students through the process of conducting family history research, thinking like a historian, honing their research skills using primary sources, and exploring case studies of important local and national people.  Go beyond family trees and help students make real-world personal connections to history. 

 

In addition to the genealogy inquiry curriculum, there will be a focus on providing resources to support African American studies.

 

 

The Learning Goals are:

• Use inclusive teaching strategies to:

  • Make genealogy accessible to all students

  • Navigate sensitive topics with students

  • Address common misconceptions about genealogy

  • Use and develop case studies to support mandates, such as African American studies

• Explore inquiry-based lessons that support students to:

  • Plan and carry out research

  • Analyze and evaluate genealogical sources

  • Draw conclusions and support claims with evidence

  • Use primary sources with support (census records, vital records, photographs, etc)

 

Intended Audience: Gr 4-8 Teachers & Administrators

Workshop Sessions: We are offering this course twice in August 2024. 

- Option 1: In-person at the Cross Building in Augusta or on Zoom on August 5th.  There will not be a recording.

- Option 2: In-person at the Augusta Civic Center on August 6th during the Educators Summit.  You will need to register for the Summit to attend.

      Virtual PLC: Optional monthly virtual PLC on Zoom throughout the school year.  Must attend the summer session.

Contact Hours: 5 contact hours available upon completion of the in-person workshop; additional contact hours for participation in the virtual PLC
