Letter of Notification

The following letter was sent to Maine special education directors from Tyler Backus, Special Services management analyst, in the spring of 2013.

Dear Special Education Director:

As part of the General Supervision System (GSS) monitoring review, the Department is also required under the Education Department General Administrative Regulations (EDGAR) 34 CFR §80.40(a) to conduct monitoring to ensure that federal fund recipients are in compliance with federal program requirements. This letter is to notify you that your School Administrative Unit (SAU) will be reviewed for the 2012-2013 school year (FY13). The focus of the monitoring will be your SAU’s compliance with requirements for the use of funds under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of 2004 (IDEA) and EDGAR as they relate to the use of federal funds.

Tyler Backus, Management Analyst, will be conducting the monitoring, which will require submission of various documents to the Department for his review through a desk audit. You may review the monitoring matrix at http://www.maine.gov/doe/specialed/support/fiscal/index.html for more information. Also, please plan to attend a webinar on May 9, 2013 at 9am or 1pm for details of the review. Please contact Kara Farwell at kara.farwell@maine.gov or (207) 624-6713 to register and obtain teleconference connection by April 26, 2013.

In the meantime, if you have any questions, please contact me at (207) 624-6670. Thank you in advance for your cooperation in this matter.

Sincerely,
Tyler Backus
Management Analyst
