Charter School Special Education Program Monitoring
The Maine Department of Education, Office of Special Services approval process is dedicated to assisting charter schools in developing approved policies and procedures for their special education programs for children with disabilities. The approval process ensures programs adhere to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and the Maine Unified Special Education Regulations (MUSER).
The approval process is completed through the Request for Proposal (RFP) process with the Charter School Commission and through the use of an Approval Grid created by the Office of Special Serivces. The archived webinar on the Charter School Approval Grid is located on our Listen & Learn website.
To facilitate the success of each new charter school, the Office of Special Services will develop a Support Plan after the completion of the Approval Grid. At the completion of the Support Plan, the charter school shall be entered into a monitoring "cohort" where the school will be reviewed every 6 years by the public school monitoring team.
