Charter School Special Education Program Monitoring
Information and procedures for commission authorization of public charter schools can be found on the Maine Charter School Commission webpage. The Charter School Commission collaborates with the Maine DOE, Office of Special Services to ensure that policies and procedures are in place to provide a free and appropriate public education (FAPE) for students with disabilities according to the regulations set forth by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and the Maine Unifed Special Education Regulations (MUSER).
To faciliate the success of each new charter school, the Office of Special Services created a Charter School Special Education Approval Grid, indicating the minimal required policies, procedures, staffing and resources that need to be in place prior to opening.
The Office of Special Services will also provide two years of individualized support as charter schools further refine their special education programs. After the charter school's second full year of operation, it shall be entered into a monitoring "cohort" with other public schools, the details of which can be found on our Public Special Education Program Monitoring webpage.
