Assessment of the Maine EMS System (PDF)
In July 2004, The EMSSTAR Group, LLC, a Maryland based EMS consultant firm, conducted an independent assessment of Maine EMS. This is their report on how Maine EMS compares to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) EMS standards, and offers recommendations in several areas (many of which have now been accomplished).

Emergency Guidelines for Maine Schools - Revised August 28, 2008(PDF)

This guidebook is for school staff who have no medical/nursing training to use when the school nurse is not available. This is not a substitute for first aid training and is not a replacement for calling EMS in an emergency. It is strongly recommended that staff who are in a position to provide first aid to students complete an approved first aid course, including CPR.

This book was originally produced by the Ohio Department of Public Safety, then modified by North Dakota EMS, and has been reviewed by several Maine physicians, nurses, and prehospital providers to make it compatible with Maine's EMS system.

Maine Trauma Systems Plan (PDF)

In 1992, work began on developing a Maine EMS Trauma Plan. This plan was drafted by the MEMS Trauma Advisory Committee (TAC) as required by the Legislature. This plan has been voluntarily adopted by every hospital in Maine. Three hospitals applied for consideration as Trauma Centers (Maine Medical Center, Portland; Central Maine Medical Center, Lewiston; and Eastern Maine Medical Center, Bangor), all other hospitals applied to be Trauma System Hospitals. The Trauma Center applicants completed an extensive application and on-site review process before being approved as such by the TAC. The criteria for both classifications is included in the Trauma Plan.

In June 1998, the Plan went into effect. Currently, the TAC is in the process of strengthening the Trauma Registry project, promoting the Trauma Plan, and discussing possible modifications to the Plan.
