Major Crimes Unit North has 20 detectives, 2 polygraphists and 4 sergeants covering Kennebec, Somerset,Penobscot, Piscataquis, Hancock, Waldo,Lincoln, Sagadahoc, Knox, Washington and Aroostook Counties.

Detectives within the Major Crimes Unit - North work out of facilities located in Machias, Ellsworth, Bangor, Houlton, Caribou, Skowhegan, Belfast and Augusta.

The Major Crimes Unit - North responded to twelve (12) new homicide scenes in 2012. Of the twelve homicides, six of the respondent's are facing charges, two committed suicide, one was shot by police and two cases were ruled justified. In one of the cases, there were two victims. The homicides occurred in: Jackson, Lamoine (3), Clinton, China, Waldoboro, Hampden, Cushing, Stockton Springs, Alton and Waterville. The MCU - North also responded to four police involved shootings (Jackman, Hermon, Edinburgh and Lamoine.

Notable cases for 2012 included a double homicide in Lamoine, another shooting in Lamoine where four people were injured (one fatally) and a triple death in Alton. The Alton death was ruled a murder / double suicide. The trial of Jay Mercier for the death of Rita St. Peter which occurred on July 5, 1980 also took place this year. Mercier was found guilty and sentenced to 70 years in prison. Gary Raub was arrested for the murder of Blanche Kimball and is awaiting trial. Kimball's death occurred in 1976. George Jaime was charged with the murder of Starlett Vining who was last seen alive in the fall of 1998. Jaime is currently awaiting trial.
