Troop G

Troop G, provides 24-hour patrol coverage for the 110 miles of the Maine Turnpike from the Piscataqua River Bridge in Kittery to Augusta. Troop G has an authorized compliment of a Lieutenant, five Sergeants, three Corporals, one Troop Detective and twenty-five Troopers. The Troop’s main office is located at 2360 Congress Street in Portland, just off Exit 46. Field offices are located at the York (mile 6.8) and West Gardiner (mile 101.8) maintenance facilities.

During 2008, more than 1.24 billion vehicle-miles were traveled on the turnpike, which is less than 2007’s figure of 1.29 billion. An average of 167,516 vehicles a day used the turnpike during 2008, a decrease of 3.6% over 2007’s figure of 173,664, but still making it the state’s busiest highway.

FOCUSED ENFORCEMENT

In addition to traffic and criminal enforcement, Troop G concentrated on drug traffickers using the Turnpike to transport their contraband to other areas of Maine and beyond. In cooperation with Federal Drug Enforcement Administration and the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency, Troopers were involved in numerous felony traffic stops of suspected drug traffickers.

The Troop has stepped up criminal patrols at the Kittery Information Center and park and ride lots located along the Turnpike, where drug trafficking, indecent conduct, vehicle burglaries, and other criminal activity tend to occur.

Troop G’s traffic enforcement program utilizes aircraft, marked and unmarked cruisers, unmarked vans and the latest laser and radar speed measuring technology. Numerous speed details were conducted on the Turnpike mainline, as well as the approaches to the toll plazas during 2008.

Commercial vehicle enforcement is a priority and is conducted in cooperation with Troop K, the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit, with special emphasis on detecting hazardous violations and “tired truckers” operating over maximum hour limits. Permanent weigh stations are located on the Turnpike in Kittery and York. Several Troop G Troopers have received specialized training in commercial vehicle enforcement and help to supplement Troop K in their enforcement efforts. Troop G personnel checked over 1,528 trucks, resulting in over 397 trucks temporarily placed out of service and 2,310 summonses issued for commercial vehicle violations during 2008.
