Educator Awards

Maine Teacher of the Year The Maine Teacher of the Year is an outstanding teacher who best represents the thousands of excellent educators in Maine. She or he serves as an advocate for the teaching profession, education and students.

All Maine certified K-12 teachers (with a four-year degree) are eligible to be nominated, from private schools as well as public schools. Any teacher, parent, student, or community member may nominate a teacher by contacting the building principal who then convenes a committee to complete the nomination papers.

Maine Educator Talent Pool - The Maine Department of Education has formed the Maine Educator Talent Pool to act as a source for selection for special recognition programs and/or membership on advisory boards or committees. Recommendation to the Talent Pool is not in and of itself an award. However, as a collection of information about some of Maine's topeducators, it is used as a reference for awards, publicity, committee development, and other recognition opportunities.

Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award The Milken Family Foundation National Educator Awards program provides public recognition and an unrestricted $25,000 financial reward to elementary and secondary school teachers, principals and other education professionals who are furthering excellence in education. By honoring outstanding educators, the program strives to attract, develop, motivate and retain talented people to the challenge and adventure of teaching.

There is no nomination or application procedure for the Milken Award. A Blue Ribbon Committee independently seeks out potential Milken Educators and recommends candidates directly to the Milken Family Foundation for consideration.

Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching - The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching are the Nation's highest honors for teachers of mathematics and science. Awardees serve as models for their colleagues, inspiration to their communities, and leaders in the improvement of mathematics and science education.

Since 1983, more than 4,100 teachers have been recognized for their contributions in the classroom and to their profession. If you know great teachers, nominate them to join this prestigious network of professionals.
