May 2007 has been an important month for Maine's Early Childhood community, as it has been host to the second and third of four planned Maine 4 Kids! Public Pre-K Forums. A total of 161 stakeholders in Early Childhood, spanning 13 counties participated in the forums presented in May (117 at the Bangor forum and 44 at the one in Machias).

These forums represent a continuing effort to keep in mind the best interests of the children served by Maine's Public 4YO programs through thoughtful discussion and community collaboration efforts.

The goals of the May Pre-K forums were to have a group-wide, documented dialogue about the needs of Maine's 4 year olds, quality benchmark specifics, and to encourage the exploration of models for working collaboratively in communities. The May 2007 forums were different from the October 2006 one in that we were able to accommodate the expressed need from the October evaluations for more panel examples of successful collaboration efforts. In Machias, there was also an expressed need for a specific group Q & A time with Janine Blatt, Harvey Boatman, and Betty Mason, which we were also able to accommodate.

The format of the complete summary section is slightly different from that of the forum in October 2006; however, is hopefully more reader-friendly. Thank you to everyone who made these forums such a wonderful and positive event for Maine's young children!
