Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS)

The Department of Education conducts the Maine Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) every other year with funding from the Division of Adolescent and School Health within the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  The survey provides us with information about adolescent health-risk behaviors that are occurring, as well as prevention indicators.  Maine has collected the majority of this data since 1993.  Randomly selected students in grades 7–12 in randomly selected public middle and high schools participate in the Maine YRBS.  School and student participation is voluntary.  Because the data is weighted, it is representative of students throughout Maine.  Once the surveys are completed, the results are calculated and made into a report.  The reports are shared with school officials, health educators, parents, health care providers and others throughout the state of Maine.

The most recent survey was conducted in 2007, funded by the Division of Adolescent and School Health within the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. For the latest data, visit:  www.mainecshp.com and www.cdc.gov/healthyyouth/yrbs.

Maine Integrated Youth Health Survey

The Maine Department of Education, the Maine Office of Substance Abuse, and the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention will be conducting an integrated survey every other year starting in 2009. K and 3 grade students, 5 and 6 grade students, and 7-12 grade students will all participate in the survey. There are four different versions of this survey at the 7-12 grade level, one of which is the YRBS survey.
