How to Become a Certified Nursing Assistant Instructor

Becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant instructor is a multi-step process:

  1. You must be a Maine RN in good standing.  This can be checked at the Board of Nursing site.
  2. You must have at least two years of work experience as an RN, with at least one of those years in a long-term care setting.
  3. You must have experience supervising Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs).
  4. You should be affiliated with an educational entity that is approved to offer CNA training.  (Maine does not allow RNs to set up independent training programs.)
  5. If you wish to teach at the secondary (high school) level, you must be certified as a secondary instructor.  Our certification group can be reached at 624-6603 or on the web.
  6. If you wish to teach at the post-secondary level, experience or coursework in teaching the adult learner is helpful. Click here for a list of post-secondary entities which are approved to offer CNA programs.
  7. You must attend a State-sanctioned Train the Trainer workshop. {This requirement has been suspended as we research alternative methods for offering this training.}
  8. You must download and become familiar with the curriculum, laws and forms contained in the Train the Trainer manual.

If you have further questions, please email Elaine Briggs at the Department of Education.
