Social Studies Standards

Maine, along with over 20 other states, is a member of the Social Studies Assessment Curriculum and Instruction (SSACI) Collaborative of the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO).  SSACI is currently in collaboration with the National Council for Social Studies and 14 other content organizations representing civics, economics, geography, and history to develop a shared social studies framework.

The College, Career, and Civic Life (C3): Framework for Inquiry in Social Studies State Standards will focus primarily on inquiry and civic engagement and on supporting the disciplinary literacy standards in the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts & Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, & Technical Subjects.

A draft of the C3 Framework will be shared with targeted groups of educators and education leaders for feedback prior to the release by CCSSO in 2013.

A vision statement for the C3 Framework was released at the National Council for the Social Studies conference in November 2012.  Please note that this document is NOT a draft of the framework, but rather attempts to provide an overview of how the C3 Framework is being developed and designed.

The Common Core State Standards

The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for English Language Arts (ELA) & Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects do not replace the Maine Social Studies Learning Results, but, rather, complement them.  CCSS support a shared responsibility for students’ literacy development and emphasize that, while students learn to read and write in ELA, they apply and develop specific literacy skills through engagement in social studies content.

Social Studies is incorporated in the K- 5 ELA Standards with expectations for reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language applicable to a range of subjects with an emphasis on informational texts.

CCSS for Literacy in History/Social Studies parallel the 6-12 ELA Standards.  Both use the same College Career Ready Anchor Standards but also include grade span standards particular to the discipline(s).

  2. Read the CCSS Introduction that provides
    • an explanation of key design considerations,
    • clarification of what is not covered by the Standards,
    • a portrait of students who meet the Standards, and
    • an explanation of the overall organization of the document.
  3. Check out this At-A-Glance graphic (PDF | JPEG), which shows where Social Studies falls under the larger CCSS umbrella.
