ACCUPLACER®

The ACCUPLACER® is a set of exams that quickly and accurately assess reading, writing, math, and computer skills. Maine's Career and Technical Education centers, community colleges and state universities use the ACCUPLACER® extensively to track achievement and to determine course placements. High school teachers can also use ACCUPLACER® results to adapt instruction and teach the skills their students need to master.

More details about the ACCUPLACER® are available at www.accuplacer.org.

Preparing for the ACCUPLACER® Math Exam

Maine students have access to a unique resource to help them prepare for the ACCUPLACER® math exams. The resource is available as the result of a collaboration between the Maine Department of Education, the Maine International Center for Digital Learning and Walch Education.

The ACCUPLACER College-Ready Math Instructional Materials:

  • are delivered through Apple's iTunes U platform and are updated automatically when changed;

  • support high school students as they prepare for college-level math classes;
  • are designed for use by math instructors as they work with students to prepare them for the ACCUPLACER® exam; and
  • allow teachers to tailor instruction for students by selecting the most appropriate lessons and activities. Each instructional unit employs a variety of instructional approaches, including pre- and post-assessments, selected online resources, and activities designed for hands-on, small group work.

Accessing the ACCUPLACER College-Ready Math Instructional Materials:

  • Use a device equipped with iTunes, including an iPad, iPhone or iTouch equipped with the iTune U app (links will initiate download).
  • Search for "Accuplacer College-Ready Materials" in the iTunes U Store.
  • Download one, several or all units.

ACCUPLACER Reimbursement

Since 2010, the Maine Department of Education has reimbursed schools for one standard ACCUPLACER® administration per student for any student who wants to take the ACCUPLACER assessment. The reimbursement typically covers four test units at $1.75 apiece.

The Department will continue this reimbursement policy through the end of the 2011-12 school year. At that time, the Department will revisit the policy to ensure the best use of state assessment funds.

To receive reimbursement for the ACCUPLACER tests, schools should send an ACCUPLACER invoice or a receipt for a paid invoice to:
