No Child Left Behind-Paraprofessional Federal Requirements:

To meet the federal requirement, a paraprofessional who provides instruction in a Title IA targeted program or all paraprofessionals in a Title IA schoolwide program must either:

1. Hold an Associate’s degree or higher; OR
2. Have forty-eight semester hours from an accredited two-year and/or four-year college(s); OR
3. Demonstrate through a local or state assessment the knowledge of and the ability to instruct in reading, writing, and mathematics.

The federal requirement must be met by:

1. January 8, 2006, for those employed in the position prior to September 1, 2002, OR
2. The hiring date for those hired after September 1, 2002.
