B. Abstract
The University of Maine at Presque Isle is seeking $173,810 from MDOE to increase teacher content knowledge and student achievement in central Aroostook’s math and science programs. The Central Aroostook Council on Education (CACE) will administer the grant program, which will focus its efforts on two high need CTEs in central Aroostook: the Caribou and Presque Isle Regional Technical Centers; and their sending schools: Caribou, Limestone, Washburn, Easton, Presque Isle, Fort Fairfield, Ashland and Mars Hill/Blaine.
The program stakeholders developed this proposal and will have an integral part in carrying out the grant activities. Stakeholders include CACE, UMPI School of Science and Mathematics, UMPI School of Education, Caribou and Presque Isle Regional Technology Centers, sending school math and science departments, and the Caribou/ UMPI Partnership for College Success.
The grant program, which will be known as the Central Aroostook Math & Science Partnership (CAMSP), will develop and implement the following activities:
- Provide the training and follow-up needed to create and sustain professional learning communities to create a culture of collaboration that ensures all students learn, with a focus on results.
- Provide professional development opportunities for math/science teachers that will encourage classroom teachers to incorporate practical applications into their lessons and help technical education faculty introduce math/science concepts into their teaching.
Assessment is foundational to ensuring the program meets its educational goals, therefore program outcomes will be aligned with Maine Learning Results and Quality Standards. Continuation of students into post-secondary education and attainment in tech occupational competencies will be monitored.
