Maine's Early Intervention Certification Process

How do I become appropriately certified and registered?

Follow these three steps...

1. Register and complete the fingerprinting process

2. Apply for certification through the Department of Education

3. Contact CDS

1. Register and complete the fingerprinting process

You can register online to be fingerprinted:

1. Connect to the State of Maine Administrator and Teacher Certification page.
2. Click on: Maine Fingerprint Registration Form.
3. Find the date and location that is most convenient for you to attend to have your fingerprints taken. *This is updated regularly. It’s all right to have your fingerprints taken before you’ve received the certification/authorization form(s).

The application review process takes several weeks. You may check the status of your application online using the MEDMS Application Status Lookup or connect directly with the Certification Office.

2. Apply for certification through the Department of Education

To apply for a teacher certification or educational technician authorization, you will need to contact the Department of Education Certification Office. Only the staff at the Department of Education Certification Office can review applications and educational transcripts and tell you whether you qualify for certification or authorization. Certification staff carefully reviews each application individually and will send you written information regarding your personal eligibility status. Determine which certification is most appropriate for you:

If you have a Bachelor’s degree, contact the Certification Office and request an Application for Initial Certification
Learn more about initial teacher certification here: http://www.maine.gov/education/forms/fingerprint/letter_1.htm

If you do not have a Bachelor’s degree, or your Bachelor’s degree is not in the field of education, request an Application for Educational Technician Authorization. Learn more about educational technician authorization here:
