Institute for the Study of Students at Risk

The Institute for the Study of Students At Risk provides demographics, statistics and essential information about needs and services for children, adolescents and families at risk. The Institute identifies the impact of risk factors and analyzes effects of educational, social and health policy on Maine youth and families. This program is a collaborative effort with the Maine Department of Education.

The Institute, currently in its fifteenth year of operation, serves as a center for research and policy analysis on broad-based issues and concerns involving children, youth, and their families at risk. It provides both practitioners and policy makers with essential information regarding appropriate services for children and youth with special needs as well as for those considered to be "at risk." The Institute also sponsors conferences and symposia, and it serves as "think-tank" for examination of the broader issues in regular education, special education, and compensatory education. More specifically, the Institute investigates:

  • The facilitation of interagency collaboration efforts regarding the provision of necessary services to children, youth, and their families at risk.
  • The research literature on prevention, remediation, and intervention strategies for children and youth at risk.
  • The interface of regular, special, compensatory, and alternative education in current school reform efforts.
  • The impact of changing demographics on children, schools, and communities.

The Institute is sponsored and funded by the Division of Special Services, Maine Department of Education and the College of Education and Human Development, The University of Maine. The Institute encourages inquiries regarding services and information.
