Who can use a crossbow?

To be eligible to purchase a crossbow hunting license, any person (16 years of age and older) must hold a valid license to hunt big game (either a big game hunting license or an archery license), and must submit proof of having successfully completed an archery hunting education course and a crossbow hunting course or evidence of having previously held adult archery and crossbow hunting license issued specifically for the purpose of hunting with a crossbow or bow and arrow in this State or any other state, province or country in any year after 1979. When proof or evidence cannot be provided, the applicant may substitute a signed affidavit.

Note: The above requirements apply to anyone 16 years of age or older who wants to hunt with a crossbow, including persons with a special handicap permit.

10 - 69 years of age:  May use a crossbow to hunt any wild bird or wild animal in season except a crossbow may NOT be used to hunt deer during **expanded archery season**, regular “October” archery season, and muzzle loading season; or to hunt turkey during the fall turkey season.

Note: A resident or nonresident 10 years of age or older and under 16 years of age may hunt with a crossbow if that person holds a valid junior hunting license (no crossbow hunting license required).

70 years of age and older: May use a crossbow to hunt any wild bird or wild animal in season including deer during the expanded archery season, regular “October” archery season, muzzle loading season on deer, and fall wild turkey season.

Convicted felons: May use a crossbow to hunt any wild bird or wild animal in season except a crossbow may NOT be used to hunt deer during **expanded archery season**, regular “October” archery season, and muzzle loading season; or to hunt turkey during the fall turkey season. Must meet archery and crossbow safety course requirements and have a valid archery license and crossbow hunting license.

Persons with permanent disability who have been issued a special handicap permit: May use a crossbow to hunt any wild bird or wild animal in season as long as they have appropriate license and/or permits, except they are not required to purchase the crossbow hunting license. They must show proof of having completed an archery and crossbow safety course or proof of a previous archery license and crossbow hunting license in any year after 1979.

**Exception: It is legal during the firearm season on deer to use a crossbow in an expanded archery area, however the person should check with town to see if there is a local ordinance which would prohibit the use of a crossbow.
