Exceptions below - Special Rules (S-Codes) are listed at the bottom of this page.

Unless otherwise noted below, the daily bag limit on brook trout is 2 fish on lakes and ponds.

County-Wide Specials:

Lakes and ponds are open to open water fishing from April 1 to December 31; all trout, landlocked salmon, and togue caught from October 1 to December 31 must be released alive at once. These waters may have additional special regulations which have been retained, check individual listings for special regulations.


Adams Pond, Bridgton. S-13; April 1 to June 20: S-6; then S-4.

Alden’s Pond, Gorham. S-11.

Beaver Pond, Bridgton. Motorboats with internal combustion engines prohibited.

Coffee Pond and tributaries, Casco. S-2, S-3, S-4, S-13.

Coffin Pond, Brunswick. S-11, S-13.

Collyer Brook, Gray. S-19.

Crooked River, Albany to Casco, etc. (Cumberland and Oxford Counties): S-1.

  • From Route35 (North Waterford), to Route 11 (Casco): April 1 to September 30: S-5; S-22; minimum length limit on landlocked salmon: 26 inches.
  • From Bolster’s Mill Road bridge downstream to Route 11 in Casco: October 1 to October 15, S-5; S-22; minimum length limit on be released alive at once.

Crystal Lake, Harrison. Minimum length limit on salmon: 16 inches.

Crystal Lake (Dry Pond), Gray. S-2, S-3.

Hinckley Pond, Lower, South Portland. S-11.

Ingalls (Foster’s) Pond, Bridgton. S-1, S-3.

Island Pond, Harrison. S-13.

Jordan River, (See Sebago Lake listing).

Lily Pond, New Gloucester. S-4, S-13. Motorboats prohibited.

Moose Pond and tributaries, Bridgton (Cumberland County), Denmark and Sweden (Oxford County). Open to the taking of smelts with the exception of Miller Brook and Sucker Brook: S-1.

Muddy River, north of Route 11/114 bridge to Lake House Road. S-24.

North Gorham Pond, Windham, Standish. Daily bag limit on trout and landlocked salmon: 1 fish in the aggregate.

Northwest River, (See Sebago Lake listing).

Panther Pond, Raymond. S-2, S-3.

Peabody Pond, Naples, etc. S-2, S-3. Lakin Brook closed to the spearing of suckers.

Pleasant Lake, Casco, etc. Lake and tributaries: Pleasant River, Windham. From the Route 302 bridge downstream to the River Road bridge: April 1 to November 30: S-6, S-27.

Presumpscot River (excluding North Gorham Pond and Dundee Pond), Standish, Windham, Gorham, Westbrook. Open to open water fishing from January 1 to December 31.

  • From Sebago Lake dam to the red markers approximately 100 feet downstream of the dam: closed to fishing
  • From the red markers to confluence with North Gorham Pond, including Eel Weir Canal and power station tailrace: S-5; total daily bag limit on landlocked salmon, trout and togue: 1 fish.
  • From North Gorham Dam downstream to tidewater: S-19.

Royal River, Yarmouth, from Elm Street downstream to tidewater. Open to fishing January 1 to December 31. S-19.

Sabbathday Lake, New Gloucester. S-2, S-3.

Saco River, (See York County).

Scarborough Wildlife Management Area. Motorboats prohibited on that portion of the area railroad right-of-way from March 1 to September 30.

Sebago Lake, and all tributaries including rivers. (Except for the area below in (f), season closes September 30.)

a) S-28. Daily limit on togue: 6 fish; minimum length limit: 14 inches; only 1 may exceed 23 inches.

b) S-22. Minimum length limit on landlocked salmon: 16 inches.

c) Lake and rivers: S-1, S-3.

d) No fishing within 100 feet of White’s Bridge.

e) Crooked River: See Crooked River listed above.

f) From October 1 to November 30, the area located between and including the Standish boat launch ramp and the Portland Water District barbless hooks, from shore and pier only; all fish caught must be released alive at once.

Stevens Brook, New Gloucester, sometimes called Cemetery Brook. From Church Road downstream to Gloucester Hill Road: S-11.

Stickey River, from Railroad Trestle to Route 114, Standish. S-24.

Thompson Lake, Casco, etc. (See Oxford County).


Special Regulations (S-Codes)

Waters that have exceptions to the general law are listed by county. In most cases, the exception will be one of the codes listed below and may affect only a portion of the regulations that govern that particular body of water, i.e. only the bag limit on salmon is different from the general law in which case it would read as follows: Smith Pond, Anytown. S-22. All other provisions of general law would apply.

S-1: Closed to the taking of smelts.

S-2: Closed to the taking of smelts, except by hook and line.

S-3: Tributaries closed to the taking of smelts.

S-4: Use or possession of live fish as bait is prohibited. (The use of dead fish, salmon eggs, worms are permitted.

S-5: Fly fishing only.

S-6: Artificial lures only.

S-7: Boundary waters with New Brunswick.

S-8: All trout less than 6 inches and longer than 12 inches must be released alive at once.

S-9: Border waters with New Hampshire.

S-10: Daily bag limit on togue: 1 fish.

S-11: Fishing restricted to persons under 16years of age; daily bag limit on trout: 2 fish.

S-12: No longer used.

S-13: No size or bag limit on bass.

S-14: No bag limit on pickerel. From July 1-September 30, artificial lures only and minimum length limit on trout: 8 inches.

S-15: Daily bag limit on togue: 3 fish; minimum length limit on togue: 14 inches, only one may exceed 18 inches.

S-16: Daily bag limit on trout: 2 fish; minimum length limit: 12 inches, only 1 may exceed 14 inches.

S-17: Daily bag limit on trout: 2 fish; minimum length limit: 10 inches, only 1 may exceed 12 inches.

S-18: Daily bag limit on trout: 1 fish, minimum length limit 18 inches.

S-19: Daily bag limit on trout: 2 fish.

S-20: Daily bag limit on white perch: 25 fish.

S-21: Daily bag limit on trout: 1 fish, minimum length limit 14 inches.

S-22: Daily bag limit on salmon: 1 fish.

S-23: No longer used.

S-24: Extended Season - Remains open to fishing from October 1 - December 31; artificial lures only; all trout, salmon, and togue must be released alive at once.

S-25: Daily bag limit on bass: 2 fish; all bass between 13 and 18 inches must be released alive at once.

S-26: Indian Territory Regulations.

S-27: All fish caught must be released alive at once.

S-28: Togue do not count towards the 5 trout and salmon, in combination, daily aggregate bag limit.
