Bucksport Man Dies in Snowmobile Accident

Bucksport, Maine – A 44-year-old Bucksport man died Saturday night (Feb. 9) in a snowmobile accident on Silver Lake in Bucksport, according to the Maine Warden Service.

Carl Coleman of 22 Coleman Lane in Bucksport was pronounced dead on the scene.

Mr. Coleman and his brother, Nathaniel Coleman, were traveling across Silver Lake around 10:30 p.m. at an apparent high rate of speed when Mr. Carl Coleman came upon the shore and hit a maple tree, according to Maine Warden Service Sgt. Patrick Devlin.

“He was overdriving his headlights,” Devlin said. “The shore came up too fast and he hit a maple tree. He was pronounced dead at the scene.”

The brothers each were riding their own snowmobile. The accident occurred a quarter-mile from the boat ramp.

The accident remains under investigation.

Mr. Coleman’s death is the fourth snowmobile-related fatality this year – and the third fatality in eight days. On Friday, Feb. 1, a 17-year-old Atkinson boy was reported missing while en route to a friend’s house to spend the night. Low visibility from a winter storm caused the boy to become lost and he fell through thin ice on Sebec Lake and drowned. He was found Saturday morning.

On Tuesday, Feb. 5, a Kennebunk man died when he missed a turn on a trail in Dayton. He hit a ditch and was thrown into a field. On Jan. 4, a 23-year-old Kennebunk man died after hitting a gate post on a shared trail in Sanford while out riding with childhood friends.
