Press ReleasesLake Arrowhead Search Reveals Stolen SnowmobilesLimerick, Maine – Two snowmobiles that went were reported through the ice on Lake Arrowhead were allegedly stolen. The Maine Warden Service responded to a call of two snowmobiles through the ice at approximately 3:25 p.m. Saturday. A witness coming upon the sleds notified authorities. Four holes were spotted in the ice and two sleds were sticking up in the area. The ice on the lake was broken up and unsafe, and those conditions remain today. Warden John Lonergan said he was able to see two sets of footprints leaving the area on Saturday afternoon. No one involved in the accident reported that the sleds had gone through the ice and there were no reports of missing persons. After reviewing the scene, Warden Lonergan and Sgt. Tim Spahr determined that the riders probably got out of the water safely, but decided to call in the Maine Warden Service dive team to be sure. Four divers, along with an airboat, searched the lake this morning and no bodies were found. “We were fairly confident no one was under the water,” Lonergan said. “But we had to be sure.” A check of the snowmobile registrations revealed that one of the sleds was stolen. The other snowmobile did not have a current registration, but one that was about four years old. The man whose name was on the registration told wardens he sold the sled years ago. The wardens believe the snowmobile was stolen also. The snowmobiles remain tied together at the bottom of the lake. The Maine Warden Service does not perform snowmobile recovery, and the owner of one sled is making arrangements to remove his sled from the lake. |
