Maine Endangered Species Program/Endangered and Threatened Species
Recommended Changes to Maine's Endangered and Threatened Species List PDF
There currently are 33 species of fish and wildlife listed as endangered or threatened under Maine's Endangered Species Act. Three of those species are also federally listed under the U.S. Endangered Species Act. An additional 16 species currently or historically occurring in Maine are listed as endangered or threatened under the U.S. Endangered Species Act, but not under the Maine Endangered Species Act. If you are curious why some species are on the federal list but not on the Maine list, or vice versa, see Frequently Asked Questions.
Every five years, Maine's Endangered and Threatened Species List is reviewed for consideration of any additions, deletions, or status changes. This list was most recently updated in 2008. The current list of Maine species (excluding plants) that are endangered or threatened under either the state or federal Endangered Species Act are listed below.
Information about the status, life history, and conservation of each listed species is presented in a fact sheet than can be accessed by selecting the species name. The fact sheets are provided in HTML and PDF formats. To view PDF documents, you will need the free Adobe Reader. If you need assistance, view our PDF Help page, email us or call us at (207) 287-8000.
All of the endangered species fact sheets are also compiled in a beautifully printed and bound book, Maine's Endangered and Threatened Wildlife, available for $10, plus tax (if applicable) and postage from IF&W's online store.
