Maine Barcode Symbols List

There are occasions when it is useful to know about the barcode practices of another library in order to avoid inadvertent duplication of patron or item barcode values. In order to assist Maine library, the Maine State Library maintains this reference list.

Initially, this site is concerned mainly with the "14-digit" or "codabar" convention, wherein patron barcodes begin with a "2" and item barcodes with a "3" - in both cases followed by a 4-digit institutional code (then an 8-digit unique sequential number followed by a MOD 10 check digit).  The table below lists those 4-digit codes.  Additions and corrections should be sent to James.JacksonSanborn@maine.edu.
