Training and Support
Project HistoryMaine InfoNet received a $40,000 grant in 2008 to offer libraries in the state the opportunity to provide their patrons access to downloadable audio books. The grant will pay for the configuration and support for three years and for one year of maintenance fees. Libraries that join this new project will be asked to pay an annual membership fee which will be used to purchase content and pay for licensing fees. This project provides online access to downloadable audio books through OverDrive. Patrons are able to checkout downloadable digital content via the Internet utilizing state-of-the-art digital copyright protection technologies for free, 24/7, from a statewide collection of audio books. In October of 2010, the Download Library received a grant from Davis Family Foundation and funding from member libraries to expand selection to include eBooks. The eBooks and audiobooks are both available to all members. There is no provision for offering just one or the other. Audio books can be burned to a CD (where permitted by publisher) and/or transferred to hundreds of supported audio devices such as MP3 Players, iPods (where permitted by publisher) or Zune players. eBooks are designed for transfer to devices that support the ePub format. These devices include the iPad/iPhone, the Kindle, the Nook, the Sony eReader, and the Kobo, among others. Membership Fees for libraries will be based on population served, regardless of type of library. Academic libraries will base the population on the head count of students, faculty and staff.
Approximately twenty percent of the fee will be used to pay the $12,000 a year maintenance cost, the remaining 80% will go to purchase content that will be available to all members of participating libraries. |
