How To Catalog Circulating Magazines

1. Create a bib record, the more complete the better. The Copy Record function (multiple folders in the GUI Cat edit window) makes it easy to "ditto" an existing bib record. Include a 245 title field of the form

  • National Geographic. [XYZ Library].

If you prefer to divide runs chronologically across multiple bib records, use:

  • National Geographic. 2001. [XYZ Library].
    or:
  • National Geographic. 1980-1989. [XYZ Library].

2. Place the issue date or other issue-specific designation in the volume field of the item record. While one could also use the call number field, this clutters up the call number index with extraneous entries. Examples:

  • Volume June 1999
  • Volume & Vol 12, No 5

Do NOT create a separate bib record for each issue.
