Maine Automated Payment (MAP) Card
In summer 2010, the MAP Card will replace paper unemployment checks. Instead of receiving a check in the mail, your benefits will be automatically deposited to your new debit card. The MAP Card means safe and convenient access to your benefits and eliminates the problem of lost, stolen or damaged checks.
- The MAP Card is convenient. No more check cashing fees or waiting in line to cash your unemployment benefits or FAC checks. Use your card everywhere VISA debit cards are accepted on the Internet or in person. The MAP Card issued by Chase is accepted at millions of locations worldwide. You can get cash at ATMs and bank tellers and get cash back with purchases at supermarkets and many other merchants.
- The MAP Card is fast. Your unemployment benefits are automatically deposited to your card within 24 hours of verification of your weekly claim. No more waiting for a check in the mail.
- The Map Card is safe. No more worries about late, lost or stolen checks, or the need to carry lots of cash. The MAP Card carries it for you. If you lose your card, it will be replaced once free (however, there is a fee for additional cards needed after the first replacement).
No approval or application is required. You automatically qualify for this card. No credit check or bank account is needed. Your weekly benefit amount is automatically deposited to your card once your weekly claim is processed.
You still have a choice. You can receive your unemployment benefits in one of two ways, the MAP Card or direct deposit to your existing bank account.
The Maine CareerCenter can give you more information on the Maine Department of Labor's transition from paper checks to automated payment debit cards. Brochures are available at all CareerCenter locations.
When will the change happen?
All new initial claimants will have the option of receiving their benefits by either the MAP Card or direct deposit beginning this summer.
About a month later, everyone already receiving, unemployment benefits will have the option of receiving their benefits by either the MAP Card or direct deposit - no more paper checks.
If you are not signed up for direct deposit, your benefit payments will automatically be deposited onto a MAP Card that you will receive in the mail. Until you get your MAP Card, your benefits will continue to come by paper check.
