Rep. Jayne Giles Named to Prominent National Economic Committee

AUGUSTA – State Rep. Jayne Crosby Giles has been named to an influential national economic panel, part of the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL). Maine House Speaker Hannah Pingree made the appointment recently.

Rep. Giles (R-Belfast) will join the NCSL’s Standing Committee on Labor and Economic Development. “I’m honored by this appointment and by the opportunity to represent Maine at the national level,” she said. “I’m looking forward to meeting legislators from other parts of the country. NCSL committees are forums where legislators can share approaches and solutions to common problems. Here in Maine, we have challenges in economic development; so hopefully I’ll be able to learn about innovations and solutions in other states.”

Rep. Giles, a second-term lawmaker, said the NCSL assignment is a good fit with her legislative experience. She is the ranking Republican on the Legislature’s Business, Reseach and Economic Development Committee. In her first term, she served on the Appropriations and Financial Affairs Committee.

NCSL’s Labor and Economic Development Committee covers state and federal issues related to labor, employment, workforce and economic development, international trade and cultural affairs. The Committee’s jurisdiction also includes pensions, Social Security, employment training and right-to-work laws.

The NCSL, based in Denver, is a bipartisan organization that serves the legislators and staffs of the nation's 50 states, its commonwealths and territories. It provides research, technical assistance and opportunities for policymakers to exchange ideas on the most pressing state issues; and it advocates for the interests of state governments before Congress and federal agencies.
