About Rep. Priest

Rep. Charlie Priest is serving his third consecutive term in the Maine House of Representatives after a 16-year hiatus. He previously served as a member of the House from 1984 to 1990, and spent years reviewing legislation as legal counsel for the Speaker. This session, he serves as the House Democratic Lead member on the Joint Standing Committee on Judiciary.

Before beginning his long career in public service, Rep. Priest attended and graduated from Dartmouth College. He then entered the U.S. Navy and served from 1967 to 1971. A lieutenant, he earned a Bronze Star for his service in the Republic of Vietnam in 1970 and 1971.

Rep. Priest attended and graduated from the University of Maine School of Law, and then served as the Maine Legislature’s Assistant Director of Legislative Research. He held that position from 1974 to 1979, before entering private practice as an attorney.

He has intermittently held elective office since 1984, serving at the state and local level. In addition to his legislative service, he has served as a Chair of the Brunswick Town Council, Chair of the Brunswick Cable TV Committee, Chair of the Augusta Conservation Commission, and is currently Chair of the Brunswick Sewer District. He has been a member of the Brunswick-Topsham Land Trust and served on the nominating committee for Brunswick’s Habitat for Humanity.

He has been an instructor in Legislation at the University of Maine School of Law from 1979 to 2000. He is also a Dedimus Justice.

Rep. Priest lives in Brunswick with his wife Patricia Ryan. They have two daughters.
