Rep. Nelson
Representative Mary Pennell Nelson was first elected to the Maine House
of Representatives in 2008. She serves on the Joint Standing Committee
on Education and Cultural Affairs. Her major areas of
focus are education, particularly higher education,
tax reform, business development and the protection of Maine’s unique
environment.
Rep. Nelson has lived in Falmouth for over 30 years. She is a
past member and chair of the Falmouth Town Council, a past member
of the Falmouth School Board, and is a past president of the Maine
Municipal Association. She served for 14 years on the State Board
of Property Tax Review. She has worked both in the business and
non-profit sectors.
Rep. Nelson is a member of the Southern Maine Community College
Foundation Board, she chairs the USM Friends of the School of
Music Advisory Board, she serves on the Board of Associates of
the Osher Map Library, she is a Corporator of Gorham Savings Bank
and a Corporator of Maine Medical Center.
Rep. Nelson has been a leader in many educational and community
organizations including the University of Southern Maine, Maine
College of Art, Smith College, the Portland Symphony Orchestra,
and the Maine Historical Society. She chaired the Conservation
Commission in Brookline, MA, in the 1970s prior to moving to Maine
and was an elected member of the Brookline Town Meeting.
Rep. Nelson has a bachelor’s degree in History and Music
from Smith College, and a master’s degree in public policy
and management from the Muskie School at USM.
Rep. Nelson’s husband, Falmouth native Kenneth Nelson,
is president of Nelson and Small, a 75-year old family business.
The Nelsons have three sons, two grandsons and four granddaughters.
In her spare time, Rep. Nelson is a musician and sings with the
Choral Art Society. She enjoys music, golf, skiing, traveling,
reading, entertaining friends and, especially, family.
