Majority Leader
John Piotti welcomes dairy farmers to state house for forum on milk pricing
Hearing examined state’s Dairy Stabilization
program
February 19, 2009
AUGUSTA —The Legislature’s Committee on Agriculture, Conservation
and Forestry, held a hearing on Maine’s Dairy Stabilization Program
on Wed., Feb. 18, 2009 at the State House. The Maine House Majority Leader
John Piotti (D-Unity), thought it was essential to host a session for
public input to address this issue which has a stark effect on rural
Maine.
“
Maine’s dairy farms are the heart of much of rural Maine, providing
over $500 million in economic activity while preserving our landscape
are feeding our families,” said Majority Leader Piotti.
Members of the Agriculture Committee have expressed their concern relating
to falling milk prices on Maine’s dairy farmers. Maine created
a Dairy Stabilization program in 2004 to provide a safety net for dairy
farmers during periods of falling prices. The state’s declining
revenues have many apprehensive that there may be inadequate funds
for the program.
“
Maine must continue to support this critical industry,” said Majority
Leader Piotti. “This will be a very important issue for rural Maine
in the upcoming budget deliberations.”
The Committee heard from dairy farmers from across the state who have
seen a decrease in their already thin margins. As the Legislature considers
the state’s two year biennial budget, programs like Dairy Stabilization
will be reviewed, but Legislators recognize the importance of dairy
farming in Maine and are committed to supporting them.
