| REAL ID Act
Compliance in Maine Updated through the 130th Legislature Introduction The federal REAL ID Act of 2005 sets minimum standards for state-issued driver's licenses and identification cards. In June 2007, Maine enacted PL 2007, c. 251, which prohibited the state from participating in a national identification card system. In 2017, the Legislature enacted PL 2017, c. 27, An Act To Require State Compliance with Federal REAL ID Guidelines. In 2019, the Legislature provided funding for several positions within the Bureau of Motor Vehicles for implementation and fulfilling the requirements of the REAL ID Act. This legislative history includes proposed and enacted legislation related to Maine's compliance with the REAL ID Act as well as proposed and enacted legislation related to residency requirements for obtaining a Maine driver's license. |
