Introduction

The Maine Tree Growth Tax Law was enacted in 1971 (36 MRS §571 et seq.) to implement the approval of a 1969 constitutional amendment (Res. 1969, c. 34). It allows the valuation of land that has been classified as forest land on the basis of productivity value, rather than on just value, thereby providing for a reduction in property taxes. Parcels of forest land 10 acres or larger may be classified in the program.
