Harry Rust Virgin, son of William Wirt Virgin, was born August 25, 1854, at Norway, Maine, eventually to become the second half of the only father and son team to serve as Presidents of the Maine Senate.
Harry was educated in the public schools in Norway and at the Westbrook Seminary before graduating from Tufts in the class of 1879.
He studied law in his fathers office and was admitted to the bar in 1882. Opening up his law practice in Portland, Virgin became one of that citys leading lawyers and citizens.
His public life began in 1897 when he was elected to the Portland City Council and continued with a term in the Maine House of Representatives from 1899 to 1901.
From 1901 to 1904 he served in the Maine State Senate, the last two years as its presiding officer.
