City of Auburn

Androscoggin CountyAuburn is a city in Androscoggin County, on the Androscoggin River, incorporated as a town on February 24, 1842, that has grown into one of the largest cities in Maine in terms of land area. Lewiston, across the river is its twin city.

In 1802 the town of Pejepscot was formed from the early Pejepscot Claim and Little's Gore.  Its name was changed to Danville in 1818.  After ceding land to Auburn in 1859, it was finally annexed by the town of Auburn in 1867 just before becoming the City of Auburn in 1868.

Auburn annexed land from Poland in1852 and from Minot in 1873 to complete its modern boundary.

According to Brunelle, The factory system of making shoes was originated in Auburn in 1835, and it was the first city in Maine to adopt the council-manager form of government in 1917.
