Moose Crashes in Maine

  • About 600 crashes with moose occur each year, resulting in several fatalities and about 200 injuries
  • With moose weighing up to 1,500 lbs. and standing 10 ft. tall, collisions can knock out their legs and cause the moose to crush a car’s passenger compartment.
  • Moose crashes can happen anywhere in Maine.
  • 80% of moose crashes and 90% of fatal crashes occur when it’s dark.

You may feel you can take a relaxed approach during lower-traffic nighttime driving, but it's then that it's vital that you SLOW DOWN and PAY ATTENTION.
