NEW SIGNAGE AND BEACONS TO BE INSTALLED AT LIBBY AVENUE ANDROUTE 25 INTERSECTION IN GORHAM
Next week, MaineDOT will install new signage and warning signals at the intersection of Libby Avenue and Route 25 in the town of Gorham. MaineDOT is implementing this action as an interim measure pending a full assessment of the intersection in the spring or summer. For reasons of accuracy and statistical reliability, such traffic evaluations must be conducted when winter conditions have passed and when peak traffic volumes can be reliably measured.
The town of Gorham requested in December that MaineDOT conduct an assessment of the intersection to determine whether a traffic signal is warranted by engineering standards. Previous analysis of the intersection and 2006 traffic counts had indicated that a signal was not warranted at the intersection when those studies were done. MaineDOT has informed the town of Gorham that a full assessment will be conducted during this spring or summer, and that the department would also act sooner to assess whether an interim measure could or should be undertaken.
MaineDOT traffic engineers this week recommended that the interim measure be implemented. This measure will involve installation of a 36" STOP AHEAD sign and oversized STOP signs on (both sides of) each approach of Libby Avenue, with a single flashing red light (solar-powered beacon) above the right-hand-side STOP signs. The department is expediting delivery of the signal apparatus and expects to have the equipment in place before the end of next week. Once the snows are gone, peak traffic volumes can be reliably measured, and a traffic study can be completed, then MaineDOT will be able to determine whether this equipment should remain in place, or whether installation of a full traffic signal or other measures should be taken.
