Heavy Snowfall Narrows Roadways
Near record snowfalls in Aroostook County have snowbanks not only reaching record heights, but narrowing area roadways.
In fact, snowbanks in some areas have significantly narrowed lanes, particularly truck climbing lanes on some three lane highways in the area.
“Drivers need to use caution when using the right hand lanes. In some cases, snowbanks have encroached heavily on these lanes, and drivers should not assume that they will have a full lane to travel in, particularly during and directly after a snowstorm. Our crews are getting to these lanes to open them back up as soon as they can, but with back to back snowstorms, it is difficult.” said Bob Watson, MaineDOT Region 5 Manager in Presque Isle.
The National Weather Service is predicting more snow for the area this weekend, which could worsen the problem.
“Whenever we have a winter like this, drivers need to use extra care when traveling roads in the county,” said Watson, “Roads become narrower, and snowbanks can obscure your line of sight. Drivers should use caution.”
