What is a Node?

The Maine Department of Transportation uses the nodal system to identify segments of highways. The node-and-segement referencing system is based on uniquely defined points on the highway system. Each point is assigned a unique number called a node number. Node numbers have been designated where the following features occur:

  • Governmental boundaries (town and county lines).
  • Urban compact lines.
  • Public road intersections.
  • Public road termini.
  • Selected railroad crossings.
  • Selected bridges.
  • Other selected locations necessary to preserve the integrity of the referencing system.

Below is a sample node reference map: the node numbers are in red text within white boxes.
