Truck Route Mapping Study

The Office of Freight and Business Services (OFBS) completed a study in November 2001 that identified a Maine Heavy Haul Truck Route Network.  The study developed planning criteria for selecting projects to improve the safe and efficient flow of truck traffic on this identified network.  This criteria will help MaineDOT planners to identify and prioritize potential projects when developing future transportation programs.

Commercial Vehicle Service Plan Project

In June 2003, the OFT issued the Maine Commercial Vehicle Service Plan.  This plan provides guidance to MaineDOT for the construction, operation, and maintenance of appropriate commercial vehicle rest area facilities in Maine.  The study upon which the plan is based found that there is a shortage of truck parking spaces, particularly in southern Maine.  The goal is to promote highway safety by providing sufficient facilities, thereby preventing driver fatigue.

The plan recommends signage improvements to identify current public and private rest areas.  Potential areas for construction of truck rest areas are identified on major truck corridors in the state, and public-private partnership solutions are discussed.  OFBS is actively investigating options for improving truck rest area availability in Maine.
