Crash Records

The Crash Records Section processes all highway crashes, approximately 45,000 a year, into a large integrated database.  They receive reports from the State Police who gather them from other law enforcement agencies around the state.  Because this section locates each crash geographically and combines it with other highway characteristics, the department is able to identify where high incidences of crashes are occurring.  They look for patterns to determine whether engineering solutions may be possible.

As  part of the High Crash Location Program (HCL) the Crash Records Section has been using a document management program called Filemagic to make the HCL data available to department personnel electronically.  The intent of the project was to determine whether document imaging would be of interest to the department.  The HCL data packets consist of a collision diagram, crash summary  I & II, accident reports, and a node map.   This data is scanned into Filemagic and made available through MDOT's network. Before this project the section would make up to five copies of each data packet, they have since cut that number by more than half.
