Maine Crash Data

MDOT manages the state database for all crashes reported by police. As prescribed by law, crashes must be reported whenever combined damage exceeds $1,000 or an injury or death result. Prior to September 30, 1999, the reportable minimum combined damage was $500.

All police crash reports are reviewed first by the Maine State Police and then by the MDOT Accident Records Section within the Traffic Engineering Division of the Bureau of Maintenance and Operations. The Accident Records Section verifies crash locations and coordinates data entry into the Transportation Integrated Network Information System (TINIS) mainframe database. Weekly uploads from TINIS are made to TIDE, MDOT's GIS-linked data warehouse. TIDE allows Safety Management personnel and others to conduct detailed analyses of crash data from 1989 to present.

These reports outline the accomplishments of the Highway Safety Improvement Program and highlight crash trends.
