Objectives of the Safety Office

Purpose

The goal of the Safety Management System (SMS) is to provide an ongoing, systematic, and comprehensive approach to reduce the frequency and severity of crashes on Maine's transportation system.

 

Objectives

  • Develop the safety portions of the Twenty-Year Plan, the Six-Year Plan and the Biennial Transportation Improvement Program.

  • Ensure that safety is considered at all phases of transportation related programs including engineering, enforcement, education, and emergency response disciplines;

  • Define performance measures and standards;

  • Identify existing and potential safety problems;

  • Identify strategies and actions to enhance safety as related to human, vehicle, and transportation system elements;

  • Evaluate the costs and safety benefits of potential strategies and actions;

  • Evaluate the effectiveness of implemented strategies and actions;

  • Produce timely summaries and reports as needed by decision makers;

  • Assist other State agencies in collaborative efforts to address transportation safety issues in areas beyond MaineDOT jurisdictional responsibilities; and

  • Review and evaluate the SMS process on a continuing basis.

Areas of involvement include:

Public roads; public pedestrian facilities; public bicycle facilities; state railroads; state ferry facilities; and connection points of public roads to public or private transportation facilities, such as rail/highway crossings, airports, ferry terminals, and trails crossing public roads.
