The Safety Management Section is actively involved with many statewide safety related agencies and organizations that closely align with MDOT's safety management objectives.

The Maine Transportation Safety Coalition (MTSC) began first as a Safety Management effort to collaborate with others in promoting safety initiatives throughout the state. MDOT's Safety Management Section recognized that in order to implement the "four E's" (Education, Engineering, Enforcement and Emergency Services), MDOT would need to identify and partner with other state agencies having a vested interest in transportation safety. MDOT therefore contacted potential partners and established committees loosely based around the four E's.

It quickly became evident that a separate and self-governing entity could accomplish multi-agency tasks more efficiently and with less concern for cross-discipline issues that might arise. The MTSC now boasts two FHWA awards and over 50 members. The coalition members work together for the common goal of reducing injuries and saving lives of people traveling in Maine.

MTSC has held four annual transportation safety conferences (2001 was a tri-state event), has received a $350,000 National Highway Transportation Safety Administration grant to improve seat belt use in Maine, and is implementing many other multi-disciplinary activities aimed at improving transportation safety in Maine.
