There
are hundreds of Work Zones in Maine
each year, ranging from short-term activities such as work on utility
lines, tree trimming, mowing and ditch clearing, to longer term
road reconstruction projects. Work Zones can be found anywhere -
on the Interstate, at bridges, hundreds of highways and secondary
roads, and even city streets. They all have one thing in common,
though – they require travelers to be extra careful.
MaineDOT wants everyone to be safe in
Work Zones, so we have developed several strategies to help increase
awareness of work zone safety concerns for all road system users.
It begins with our own employees – in addition to our ongoing training
programs, we hold an employee contest. We reach out to the traveling
public through our partnerships with WGME
TV13 ( Portland ) and WABI TV5
( Bangor ) with Flash, the MDOT Road Model, providing safety tips,
plus we hold a radio contest with prizes. Perhaps the most fun activity
is our work with Maine kids
in our highly successful 4 th Grade Work Zone Safety Poster Contest,
which ends with a news conference in early April featuring the Governor,
who unveils the winning entry, which is selected from seven finalists
highlighted on the mainebackseatdriver.com
website. Below are links to Work Zone crash data and
other informational and educational resources. We hope you find
this material to be informational, and that it helps you to help
us improve the safety of our work zones year round.
